San Ignacio – Belize

We ended the trip in Dangriga at about 4pm so Martin, Keren, Matt and I jumped in a taxi to take us to the bus stop. We had just missed the last bus and had to wait until 5.30pm for the next bus to take us to Belmopan and then San Ignacio. This was our first time taking the ‘Chicken Buses’ that are a common means of transport in Central America (the only cheap way for us to get from Dangriga to San Ignacio). We were glad we were going with Martin and Keren so there were four of us, not just us two.

The buses are old American school buses and our first experience was actually pretty good. The bus to Belmopan took about two and a half hours and although it was no ADO bus (the great buses through Mexico) it was completely fine, just a little bumpy. Also the whole journey only cost us a few dollars. At Belmopan (the capital city of Belize) we waited a few minutes for our next bus to San Ignacio. All very easy, I guess it helps that everyone speaks English and were very helpful. The bus to San Ignacio was similar to the first one and only took us about 30 minutes. We had all booked a place to stay close to the bus station as the plan was to leave for Guatemala early the next morning. We were glad that we had decided to stay a night in San Ignacio and not attempt to get to Guatemala the same day as it was already night time when we arrived. We had booked a cheap hotel called ‘Tropicool’, it was was a bit hard to find but did the job for one night. We met Martin and Keren for dinner which was really good. San Ignacio looks like a pretty cool little town, but we were all keen to get to Guatemala so didn’t have long there.
